    Sarah: Benevolent actions/virtues can be deceptively selfish and easily misguided

    Hurley: Does the origin of virtue or reason undermine its truth or value?

 

Amari: Adjusting emotions seems to undermine Shiffrin’s thinker-based approach to free speech

 

After break:

 

Tara: Wealth and antitrust laws as they pertain to sympathy, why the wealthy maintain their wealth and how it threatens democracy.

 

Thomas: How to maximize sympathy (empathy) through relationships, whether society is mostly selfish or sympathetic.

 

Jess: How Smith’s concept of rank and wealth relates to privilege today. Also ties into the privilege of rank and sympathy.

 

Josh: Decency, psychological theory, and celebrity worship.

“It would be an exciting discussion to develop why certain groups of people have different standards of propriety and why they came to those definitions.”

 

Cam: Complications of love. How does love pertain to empathy? Rarity of love.

 

Other things to discuss:

Death

Distinction between sympathy and empathy

Politics - bipartisan division, polarization resulting from mutual sympathy

Class distinction - what about before there was appreciable wealth? Was ambition really a thing?

  In “Unstrapping the Straightjacket of ‘Preference;’ a Comment on Amartya Sen’s Contributions to Philosophy and Economics”, Elizabeth Anderson expands Sen’s suspicion of ‘preference’ as the function of rational decision making. In attempting to fill Sen’s lacuna regarding rational judgments and building off his prior work, Anderson puts forth “ The Priority of Identity to Rational Principle : what principle of choice it is rational to act on depends on a prior determination of personal identity, of who one is” (30). Identity advances the force of collective agency. According to Anderson, “In taking up the perspective of collective agency, the parties to an n-person prisoner’s dilemma can see their actions as jointly advancing a desirable goal even though none of their actions taken in isolation has a positive marginal impact on that goal” (30).
